$10 Gold Commemorative
The 1984 Olympics Commemorative $10 gold coin was the only gold coin minted by the U.S. Mint to commemorate the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics. This Olympic Commemorative gold coin marked the first time in over 50 years that the Mint produced a $10 gold coin.
The weight, size, and fineness are identical to the Mint's older ten-dollar gold coin which was issued in 1933. The Olympic Commemorative ten dollar gold coin was struck at four different U.S. Mint facilities: Philadelphia, Denver, San Francisco, and West Point.
This coin is also the first to bear the "W" mint mark for West Point. The West Point mint was also the only mint to strike an uncirculated version of this coin.
Obverse
The obverse depicts two Olympic runners holding a torch with the inscription "Liberty" at the top of the coin. The runners are bracketed by "Los Angeles" and the Olympic logo on the left side and "In God We Trust" on the right side. Below the runners' feet are "Olympiad XXIII". The obverse was designed by Chief Engraver John Mercanti from a sketch by James M. Peed.
Reverse
The reverse of the coin features a heraldic eagle clutching an olive branch and arrows. 13 stars appear above the eagle. The reverse inscriptions include the denomination "Ten Dollars" and "E Pluribus Unum" on two banners above the eagle. The reverse was designed by Chief Engraver John Mercanti.
