Proof Gold American Buffalo
In June 2006, the United States Mint commenced production of America's first 24-karat (.9999% fineness) one-ounce coin. This beautiful gold coin, nicknamed "The Buffalo," is based upon American sculptor James Earle Fraser's revered Buffalo Nickel of 1913. The Buffalo displays Fraser's classic design of an American Indian on the coin's obverse and the renowned American bison on the reverse. This proof coin comes in an elegant hardwood box with a matte finish and a faux leather inset and is accompanied by a certificate of authenticity signed by the Director of the United States Mint.
Obverse
The obverse of the coin depicts a Native American, whom Fraser said he created as a mixture of the features of three chiefs from different American Indian tribes: Big Tree, Iron Tail, and Two Moons.
Reverse
The animal depicted on the reverse is believed by most to be the bison named Black Diamond who lived in the New York City Central Park Zoo during the 1910s.
