Description
Unlike many of the coins that we offer as gold
bullion, Circulated Mexican 50 Pesos gold coins are not official modern
bullion issues. In fact, Mexico mints the Silver Libertad and Gold Onza
as its modern issue bullion coins, although these coins have no legal
tender value.
While Mexico did release six different sizes of Gold Peso coins
(specifications below), the design information listed here is only
applicable to the largest of these coins, the 50 Peso.
Design
The obverse of the Mexican 50 Pesos features a
striking portrait of Winged Victory standing in front of the Mexican
volcanoes Iztacc'huatl and Popocat'ptl. This coin is often compared to
America's most beautiful coin, the $20 Saint-Gaudens, for this reason.
The obverse also lists the face value ('50 PESOS'), the gold content,
and the date of issue across from the date of Mexican Independence,
1821.
As a side note, coins dated 1943 only have a variation on this
design. The gold content ('37.5 Gr. ORO PURO') appears on both sides of
Victory, instead of only to the viewer's right.
The reverse features an eagle and snake design surrounded by the
words 'ESTADOS UNIDOS MEXICANOS', which translate to United Mexican
States.
Minting Information
Mexican 50 Pesos gold coins are often
referred to as Centenarios. Their first year of issue was 1921, 100
years after full Mexican independence from Spain was achieved under
General Agustin de Iturbide. Since they were minted to celebrate
Mexico's 100th anniversary of independence, the date 1821 is featured
on the obverse of these coins.
