President Donald Trump reacted sharply after new data showed U.S. GDP grew at an annualized rate of 1.4% in the fourth quarter of 2025, well below expectations of roughly 2.5%. He blamed the earlier government shutdown and renewed calls for lower interest rates, again criticizing Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell, as tensions between the White House and the Federal Reserve continued to build.

That same day, the U.S. Supreme Court struck down a significant portion of the administration’s tariff program, ruling that the president does not have the authority to impose broad tariffs without congressional approval. The decision invalidates many tariffs imposed under emergency powers and adds another layer of uncertainty around trade policy and future revenue while leaving open the question of whether past tariff collections may need to be refunded.
