Since its inception the 1 oz American Gold Eagle is the biggest gold coin minted by the US Mint. It has a face value of $50.00 and the coin contains 91.67% gold.
The remainder of the coin is comprised of other composite metals which give it a hardness and keep it from scratching. Gold is notoriously soft, so the additional metals make the coin more durable. This does not detract from the pure 1oz of gold the coin still contains so it weighs a bit more than one full ounce.
The most popular way to acquire the American Eagle, since Goldline began selling the 1oz gold American Eagle, is in the monster box which contains 500 of these beautiful coins.
The coin features the iconic image of the Lady Liberty designed by famed coin designer Augustus Saint-Gaudens. The American Eagle coins can be found in brilliant uncirculated condition and also, they are minted as proof coins. Proof Gold Eagles are collector items and carry a higher premium than standard bullion 1oz Gold Eagles.
