The 1866 to 1908 Gold Liberty Half Eagle was designed by Christian Gobrecht, the third Chief Engraver of the United States Mint. This $5.00 United States Gold coin was a workhorse in our nation’s economy as we recovered from the Civil War. During this important period on our nation’s history, we were expanding our territory by adding States to the Union, building skyscrapers and we went to war with Spain. This beautiful .900 fine gold coin was struck at the Philadelphia, Carson City, Denver, New Orleans, and the San Francisco Mints. The obverse features Lady Liberty surrounded by 13 stars representing the 13 original colonies. The reverse displays an American eagle with a shield with olive branches and arrows in its talons. The eagle is surrounded by the words the United States of America and a ribbon above the eagle include In God We Trust.
